From the President's Desk
Greetings from all of us to all of you. This is probably one of the toughest economic time periods many of us have experienced. Fuel and food costs are rising at alarming rates, even though the federal government fails to acknowledge either in their “inflation index,” and the domino effect that grips the country results in job losses, stock market downturns, and overall diminished consumer confidence.

In the past fifty years the timber industry and acreage real estate business has seen modest increases and decreases in good times and bad, but this downturn threatens to take all of us with it. Our timber market analysis within this newsletter gives a great overview of the whole story, and there is good news amongst the flood of bad. Alternative energy “experts” are looking at renewable sources like corn and trees and are analyzing each carefully. It appears that wood and wood by-products are very appealing options at this point and we are excited by what the future may hold.

Now is the time to finalize plans for herbicide applications and reforestation. Although the drought is not totally over, we have gotten enough rain to allow all
herbicide applications for site prep, release, and control of exotics/invasives to proceed. If you have any thoughts of improving your property in that manner, please give us a call.

The new Farm Bill finally passed Congress, was vetoed by President Bush, and his veto was overridden. Implementation meetings are being held currently to determine how to deliver new monies and programs, so keep a watchful eye and ear to see if there are opportunities to share in any cost sharing funds that become available. It is important that we know your goals so that when we learn of opportunities we are able to match your needs with available monies. In tough times like these it is extremely important to make every dollar go as far as possible.

We hope you are having a great summer and know that you join us in hoping for better times and cooler weather.

Michael Dooner, President
